Standard lubricants (KY Jelly, Astroglide, baby oil, saliva) significantly reduce sperm motility and viability. Pre-Seed is the most studied fertility-friendly lubricant and has been shown to maintain sperm function. BabyDance is FDA-cleared as fertility-friendly. Coconut oil appears safe in limited studies but has not been rigorously tested. The best approach: skip lubricant if you can, use Pre-Seed or BabyDance if you need it.

Why Regular Lubricants Are Harmful to Sperm

Sperm are extraordinarily sensitive to their chemical environment. They thrive in a narrow pH range (7.0–8.5), specific osmolality (280–330 mOsm/kg), and appropriate viscosity. Most commercial lubricants fail on multiple fronts:

What the Research Shows

A 2014 study in Fertility and Sterility tested multiple lubricants against human sperm in vitro:

The Fertility-Friendly Options

Pre-Seed

The most studied fertility lubricant. Formulated to match the pH (7.4), osmolality, and viscosity of fertile cervical mucus. Applied intravaginally via applicator or externally. Available over the counter for $15–$25 per tube.

BabyDance

FDA-cleared as a “fertility-friendly personal lubricant.” Similar pH and osmolality profile to Pre-Seed. Paraben-free and glycerin-free. $15–$20 per package.
